Optimal slot dimension for skirt support structure of coke drums

Edward WANG, Zihui XIA

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2018, Volume 13, Issue 4,   Pages 554-562 doi: 10.1007/s11465-018-0513-y

Abstract:

The skirt-to-shell junction weld on coke drums is susceptible to fatigue failure due to severe thermal cyclic stresses. One method to decrease junction stress is to add slots near the top of the skirt, thereby reducing the local stiffness close to the weld. The most common skirt slot design is thin relative to its circumferential spacing. A new slot design, which is significantly wider, is proposed. In this study, thermal-mechanical elastoplastic 3-D finite element models of coke drums are created to analyze the effect of different skirt designs on the stress/strain field near the shell-to-skirt junction weld, as well as any other critical stress locations in the overall skirt design. The results confirm that the inclusion of the conventional slot design effectively reduces stress in the junction weld. However, it has also been found that the critical stress location migrates from the shell-to-skirt junction weld to the slot ends. A method is used to estimate the fatigue life near the critical areas of each skirt slot design. It is found that wider skirt slots provide a significant improvement on fatigue life in the weld and slot area.

Data Centric Design: A New Approach to Design of Microstructural Material Systems Article

Wei Chen, Akshay Iyer, Ramin Bostanabad

Engineering 2022, Volume 10, Issue 3,   Pages 89-98 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2021.05.022

Abstract:

Building processing, structure, and property (PSP) relations for computational materials design is at the heart of the Materials Genome Initiative in the era of high-throughput computational materials science. Recent technological advancements in data acquisition and storage, microstructure characterization and reconstruction (MCR), machine learning (ML), materials modeling and simulation, data processing, manufacturing, and experimentation have significantly advanced researchers’ abilities in building PSP relations and inverse material design. In this article, we examine these advancements from the perspective of design research. In particular, we introduce a data-centric approach whose fundamental aspects fall into three categories: design representation, design evaluation, and design synthesis. Developments in each of these aspects are guided by and benefit from domain knowledge. Hence, for each aspect, we present a wide range of computational methods whose integration realizes data-centric materials discovery and design.

Strategic Study of CAE 2018, Volume 20, Issue 4,   Pages 90-96 doi: 10.15302/J-SSCAE-2018.04.015

Abstract:

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the significance of the Chinese Academy of Engineering's "China Intelligent Manufacturing Development Strategy Research Report Based on the New Generation of Artificial Intelligence", the author adopts the method of deconstruction and reconstruction, to analyze the Reference Architecture Model of Industrial 4.0 (RAMI 4.0) of Germany, and compared with the general architecture of intelligent manufacturing proposed in the report of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and similarities and differences of each other are found. It is believed that the general architecture of the intelligent manufacturing in China is superior in intelligence. This is the Chinese contribution to the development of intelligent manufacturing. At the same time, the analysis deepens the understanding of the both architectures.

A solution to stochastic unit commitment problem for a wind-thermal system coordination

B. SARAVANAN,Shreya MISHRA,Debrupa NAG

Frontiers in Energy 2014, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 192-200 doi: 10.1007/s11708-014-0306-x

Abstract: Unit commitment (UC) problem is one of the most important decision making problems in power system. In this paper the UC problem is solved by considering it as a real time problem by adding stochasticity in the generation side because of wind-thermal co-ordination system as well as stochasticity in the load side by incorporating the randomness of the load. The most important issue that needs to be addressed is the achievement of an economic unit commitment solution after solving UC as a real time problem. This paper proposes a hybrid approach to solve the stochastic unit commitment problem considering the volatile nature of wind and formulating the UC problem as a chance constrained problem in which the load is met with high probability over the entire time period.
